Tinotenda Hove – A Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) officer has found himself on the wrong side of the law after being arrested in a $40 bribe sting operation. The officer, stationed at ZRP Zengeza, is facing charges of criminal abuse of duty as a public officer, or alternatively extortion, in a case that has raised fresh concerns about corruption within the police force.

According to reports, the incident began on 7 June 2025, when a suspect was arrested for allegedly being in possession of a stolen Samsung Galaxy A04E. Later that same day, the suspect’s friend approached the investigating officer—now the accused—in a bid to get information about the case.

Instead of offering clarity or professional assistance, the officer is alleged to have demanded a US$200 bribe to release the suspect and “shelve” the matter. Disturbed by the demand, the friend promptly reported the incident to the CID Police Anti-Corruption Unit (PACU).

What followed was a carefully planned trap operation. On 9 June 2025, PACU detectives accompanied the complainant to ZRP Zengeza. The accused officer allegedly instructed the friend to meet him at office G13, then redirected him to office G16, where the transaction was to occur.

Under close surveillance, the complainant handed over US$40 in marked trap money—comprising one $20 note (Serial: PH50115833C) and two $10 notes (Serials: PK45658296B and PB36416637E). The accused received the cash inside office G16, unaware that detectives were observing every move.

Moments later, officers swooped in and arrested him on the spot, finding the trap money in his left hand.

The accused was brought before the Chitungwiza Magistrates’ Court, where he was granted bail of US$100. As part of his bail conditions, he must:

  • Reside at his current address until the case is concluded
  • Report to CID PACU every Friday between 6 AM and 6 PM
  • Avoid any contact with witnesses or involvement in the investigation

The matter has been remanded to 11 July 2025, when a trial date is expected to be set.
