Zanu PF Women’s League Says Mnangagwa To Stay Beyond 2028

Tinotenda Hove – The Zanu PF Women’s League has publicly declared its support for President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa to remain in power until 2030—sparking renewed debate over Zimbabwe’s constitutional term limits.

Speaking at a Women’s League meeting held at Zanu PF headquarters in Harare on Friday, the wing’s secretary for administration, Monica Mutsvangwa, said the call was in line with a resolution adopted by the ruling party at its 2023 annual conference.

“All chairladies of the 10 provinces are moving with resolution number one. All provinces are behind President Mnangagwa as we journey towards 2030,” Mutsvangwa said.

Mnangagwa, who secured re-election in the disputed August 2023 general election, is currently serving what is constitutionally his second and final term as President. According to Section 91 of Zimbabwe’s 2013 Constitution, a president may serve a maximum of two five-year terms.

The Women’s League’s endorsement of a 2030 target has fueled concerns that Zanu PF may attempt to amend the constitution to extend Mnangagwa’s stay in office—despite his public statements in the past that he would respect term limits.

Critics argue that any attempt to push beyond the two-term limit would undermine constitutionalism and further weaken democratic institutions in the country.

“This is the same dangerous rhetoric that has led to authoritarianism across Africa,” said one political analyst. “Zimbabweans must watch closely what Zanu PF does next—resolutions today can become constitutional amendments tomorrow.”

Mnangagwa has not publicly responded to the Women’s League’s latest endorsement.
