Zanu PF activists created chaos in Gutu South Constituency on Saturday, resorting to harassment and intimidation of villagers ahead of the anticipated March 31 protests. The situation has sparked growing concerns over political unrest and rising tension in the region.
Villagers in the area were reportedly coerced into attending a Zanu PF meeting at Maungwa Business Centre, where they were strongly advised to distance themselves from the upcoming protests. According to one villager, they were threatened with severe consequences should they participate in the demonstrations. “We were forced to attend a Zanu PF meeting at Maungwa Business Centre. We were intimidated. They threatened to eliminate our children if they take part in the protests,” said the villager, speaking under the condition of anonymity for fear of retribution.
The actions of the activists have drawn condemnation, with reports indicating that Gutu South Member of Parliament, Pupurai Togarepi, not only condoned but also actively supported the harassment of locals in the area. It is alleged that Zanu PF activists were seen using his vehicles to facilitate the intimidation campaign, further implicating him in the controversy.
In addition, several Zanu PF vehicles were spotted in the constituency, reportedly monitoring suspicious or clandestine activities linked to the protests. A source within the party revealed that the vehicles were part of an effort to closely monitor any signs of dissent or unrest, heightening the atmosphere of fear and uncertainty in Gutu South.
The growing use of intimidation tactics by political figures and activists highlights the escalating political tension across Zimbabwe as the country approaches the March 31 protests. These developments are fueling widespread concern over the safety of those who wish to peacefully express their dissatisfaction with the current government.
