War Veterans Deserve Respect, Not Bicycles

The government’s recent decision to hand out bicycles to Zimbabwe’s war veterans is nothing short of a mockery. Most genuine war veterans are now well over 70 years old, making such a gesture impractical and disrespectful. Instead of meaningful support, they are offered a symbolic gift that barely acknowledges the sacrifices they made for the country’s liberation.

At the same time, the state continues to lavish expensive cars and other luxuries on wealthy individuals, highlighting a stark double standard. Those who fought for freedom and endured untold hardships in their youth are being treated as an afterthought, receiving handouts that fall far short of what they truly deserve.

This approach diminishes the dignity of war veterans and undermines the value of their contribution to Zimbabwe. Rather than offering bicycles, the government should focus on providing meaningful support such as pensions, healthcare, and housing—resources that genuinely improve their quality of life.

The nation owes a debt to its liberation heroes, and symbolic gestures cannot replace the respect and care they are entitled to in their twilight years. War veterans deserve more than public relations stunts; they deserve recognition, dignity, and tangible support.
