Zanu PF youths and supporters have launched a spirited defence of controversial businessman Wicknell Chivayo, describing him as a patriotic investor whose efforts are being unfairly criticised. The defence came via a post shared on a pro-Zanu PF Facebook platform, amid growing public scrutiny over Chivayo’s close ties to the ruling party and the government’s tender processes.

In a strongly-worded statement posted on Monday, the youths drew parallels between Chivayo and prominent global billionaires, arguing that Zimbabwe should celebrate its own local investors rather than vilify them.

“In America we have Elon Musk. In Britain, Warren Buffett. In Nigeria, Aliko Dangote. All of them are called investors in their countries,” the post read. “In Zimbabwe, we have Sir Wicknell — but here, you call him chigananga (a derogatory term).”

The group praised Chivayo’s recent donations of luxury vehicles and claimed that his financial activities were directly contributing to the national economy. They cited examples such as the high import duties paid on the cars he donates, which they say generate revenue for the government. They also pointed out that the vehicles are being distributed via Exquisite Car Sales, a Zimbabwean-owned business, which they say is being uplifted through these transactions.

Additionally, they highlighted Chivayo’s philanthropic efforts, claiming that his generosity supports numerous workers and their families, including those based at religious institutions like the Chipaga shrine.

“Having people like Sir Wicknell close to the President is good for us,” the post continued. “He shares project ideas and business ventures, which can help develop the country. If someone like me got that opportunity, you’d be rushing to accuse me of abusing power.”

The group decried what they described as widespread jealousy towards successful individuals in Zimbabwe and called for unity and gratitude. “I pray kuti dai Mwari atiwanira nyasha tagona kukunda,” the post concluded. “I stand with Sir Wicknell. Down with the haters on Facebook.”

This public show of support comes at a time when Chivayo is facing mounting criticism for allegedly benefiting from government contracts without delivering tangible results, with many calling for greater transparency and accountability.
