Harare- Suthisa Ilizwe’ Gutsaruzhinji President and Patriot in Command, Sybeth Musengezi has given the Zimbabwe Republic Police a 14 day ultimatum to act on police corruption and brutality threatening to take the matter to the Zimbabwe Independent Commissions Commission.

In a letter delivered to the ZRP dated 25 July 2025, addressed to the Commissioner Genereal of Police, Stephen Mutamba, Suthisa Ilizwe- Gutsaruzhinji called on the police boss to launch immediate investigation into the abuses of power by police details adding that those found on the want side of the law must be held accountable for their actions. Musengezi also called on the police to reform its policing practices to prioritise public safety ahead of extortion.

The letter was delivered to the police headquarters and received by one Sergent Mukau at 11:18 am.

Ref: Urgent Action Needed Against Police Corruption and Brutality.

I am writing to demand immediate action to address two critical issues undermining public trust in the Zimbabwe Republic Police.

1. Harrassment and Extortion involving Pirate Taxis: Police officers routinely engage in dangerous chases with pirate taxi drivers, not to enforce but extort bribes. These reckless pursuits endanger pedestrians, vendors and commutters resulting in injuries, property damage and fatalities. Police officers appear to profit from the chaos rather than resolve it.

2. Systematic corruption against motorists: Roadblocks, intersections and robots have become illegal revenue collection points. Police officers deliberately delay motorists, threaten vehicle impounding and demand bribes further burdening struggling citizens.

This conduct mirrors the corrupt legacy of former Police Commissioner General of Police, Augustine Chihuri and betrays the government ‘s 2017 reform pledges. As a leader, your integrity is on the line.

I urge you to:

• Launch immediate investigation into these abuses of power
• Hold corrupt officers accountable
• Reform policing practices to prioritise public safety over extortion

Failure to act within 14 days will compel us to escalate this matter to the Zimbabwe Independent Complaints commission that we have taken the liberty of copying in this letter.
