Tinotenda Hove – Smart water metering technology is revolutionising water management in Zimbabwe, with over 15,000 families and businesses now connected to the digital system across the country.

The introduction of smart meters has helped eliminate long-standing issues such as unfair billing, bringing transparency and control to water usage.

Five years ago, communities like Karoi faced challenges under the post-paid water system. Many residents received unexpectedly high bills, and managing water consumption was difficult due to lack of real-time tracking.

That changed with the rollout of smart meters under a partnership between the Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA) and Helcraw Water.

“It was really a nightmare getting a bill that was almost shocking. But since the smart meters were introduced last year, I can plan around what I use each month. From a bill of US$30, I am now paying half for my water,” said one Karoi resident.

The installation of 15,000 smart water meter units in areas such as Karoi, Guruve, Gokwe, Hwange, and Mvuma is proving to be a game-changer. The system enables residents to monitor and manage their water usage, improving efficiency and reducing unnecessary costs.

Authorities say the initiative marks a step forward in modernising the country’s water infrastructure and empowering communities with smarter resource management tools.
