Tinotenda Hove – History was made on Friday when 30-year-old Silibaziso Mlotshwa was installed as Chief Mvuthu, becoming the first woman to hold the position in Matabeleland North.

Her elevation brings to an end an 11-year leadership vacuum in the chieftaincy and represents a significant breakthrough for women in traditional leadership roles, a space long dominated by men.

Speaking at her installation, Mlotshwa pledged to serve her community with dedication and humility. “I am ready to serve my people with commitment and ensure that our traditions and development go hand in hand,” she said.

While her appointment has been widely celebrated as a progressive step towards gender equality, it has not been without controversy. Some critics have questioned the government’s involvement in the succession process, arguing that it undermines traditional structures.

Nevertheless, Mlotshwa’s rise has inspired optimism among many, who see her as a unifying figure capable of blending cultural heritage with modern leadership. Supporters believe her youthful energy will inject new life into community governance and strengthen local development efforts.
