Prominent Star FM Presenter Dies

Tinotenda Hove – Celebrated Star FM presenter and arts advocate, Babongile Sikhonjwa, has died. He was 49.

In a statement on Sunday, Star FM described his passing as a huge loss, not only to the station but also to Zimbabwe’s wider creative community.

“It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the untimely passing of our beloved colleague and presenter, Babongile Sikhonjwa, who died this morning,” the broadcaster said.

Sikhonjwa joined Star FM in 2023 as host of The After Drive (Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 6:30pm). Within a short space of time, he won the hearts of many listeners with his charisma, wit, and passion for the arts.

“His passion, charisma, and deep commitment to the creative arts made him not only a remarkable broadcaster but also a powerful advocate for Zimbabwe’s artistic community,” Star FM management noted.

Beyond radio, Sikhonjwa was celebrated for championing new talent, giving a platform to many emerging musicians and artists. “He was especially known for his unwavering support of emerging talent, consistently using his platform to profile and promote upcoming artists. His efforts helped launch and elevate many careers, and his legacy will live on in the voices and stories he helped bring to light,” the station said.

Colleagues and listeners alike remembered him for his vibrant personality and dedication. “Babongile’s energy, laughter, and love for the arts will be sorely missed,” read the statement.

Star FM extended condolences to Sikhonjwa’s family, friends, colleagues, and the many fans whose lives he touched.

“May his soul rest in eternal peace,” the broadcaster said.
