Violent clashes erupted in Harare today as Zimbabwean police confronted large crowds of youths gathering at Robert Mugabe Square, also known as Freedom Square. The protesters, who had assembled to voice their opposition to President Mnangagwa’s third-term bid, were met with tear gas as law enforcement moved in to disperse the crowd.
The protests, which took place behind the Rainbow Towers Hotel (formerly known as the Sheraton), quickly escalated as police deployed tear gas to control the demonstrators. “We were simply expressing our frustration with the government, but the police came at us with force,” said one protester, who described the situation as chaotic.
The main focus of today’s demonstrations is to stop President Mnangagwa’s attempt to secure a third term in office, with many protesters also calling for his immediate resignation. “We want Mnangagwa out. His time is up, and the country is suffering under his rule,” another protester shouted as the crowd began to scatter amidst the tear gas.
The unrest in Harare comes amid growing discontent over Zimbabwe’s political and economic crisis, with many citizens demanding change and a new direction for the country. The police’s aggressive response has only added to tensions, with critics accusing the government of trying to silence dissent through force.
