Opposition Party Leader Warns: Zimbabwe Cannot Wholly Rely on Diaspora Remittances

Tinotenda Hove– Freedom Fighters for Change president Michael Makaza has accused the Zanu PF government of presiding over an economy that survives on desperation rather than sound policy, insisting that remittances from abroad cannot sustain the nation.

Speaking on Saturday ahead of his party’s official launch set for September 13, Makaza said the heavy dependence on diaspora money was a glaring sign of failure.

“Zimbabwe’s reliance on diaspora remittances is a stark reminder of the country’s failed economic policies,” Makaza said. “Instead of begging for scraps from abroad, we need sound policies that create opportunities for our citizens at home. It’s time for a new direction, one that prioritizes job creation, economic growth, and sustainable development.”

Makaza outlined his party’s economic vision, urging leaders to shift focus toward long-term solutions that address Zimbabwe’s structural challenges.

“We urge our leaders to focus on creating a conducive business environment, investing in infrastructure, and promoting innovation,” he said. “Only then can we stem the brain drain and encourage our talented Zimbabweans to build their country.”

The opposition leader added that the launch of Freedom Fighters for Change on September 13 would mark the beginning of what he called a “movement for economic revival and dignity.”

“Our people deserve more than empty promises. They deserve opportunities to thrive in their own land,” Makaza declared. “This is about #WeMove, #EconomicRevival, and ultimately, a #NewZimbabwe.”
