Tinotenda Hove- Ngezi Platinum FC head coach Takesure Chiragwi has publicly apologized for slapping one of his players during Saturday’s tense 1-1 draw against Dynamos FC at Rufaro Stadium.
The incident, which occurred moments after Chiragwi was shown a red card, drew widespread criticism from fans and football authorities. In a statement released on Sunday, the coach admitted that his actions were unacceptable and expressed deep remorse.
“I wish to sincerely and unreservedly apologise for my regrettable conduct during the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match between Ngezi Platinum Stars and Dynamos FC,” said Chiragwi. “My actions on the touchline, which were broadcast live, were wholly inappropriate and unbecoming of a coach, leader, and representative of our game.”
He went on to issue a personal apology to the player involved, McDonald Makuwe. “I am deeply sorry for my behaviour towards you. Regardless of the circumstances or emotions of the moment, there is no justification for my actions, and I take full responsibility for the hurt and embarrassment they may have caused you,” he said. “I have since spoken with you directly to apologise in person, and I am grateful for your understanding and graciousness.”
Chiragwi also extended his apologies to Ngezi Platinum Stars, the Premier Soccer League (PSL), the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA), and football fans across the country. “My conduct fell far short of the standards expected of me, and I acknowledge the damage it has caused to the reputation of the game, my club, and our national institutions,” he said.
The coach confirmed that he has temporarily stepped aside from his national team duties with the Warriors ahead of the upcoming FIFA World Cup Qualifiers. “In the spirit of transparency and respect for due process, I have stepped aside to allow disciplinary procedures to take place without prejudice,” he explained. “I will cooperate fully with the investigations by the PSL and any other relevant authorities and accept whatever outcome or sanction is deemed appropriate.”
Chiragwi concluded by pledging to learn from the incident. “I remain committed to learning from this mistake, rebuilding trust, and proving through my actions that this does not define me,” he said.
