Tinotenda Hove – A newly emerging strain of Covid-19, known as Stratus, is rapidly spreading across the United Kingdom, raising concerns among health experts due to its apparent resistance to existing immunity and its unusual symptom profile.
According to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), the Stratus strain is distinguishable from previous variants by its tendency to cause a hoarse voice, a symptom not commonly associated with earlier forms of the virus.
The strain has two known variants: XFG and XFG.3, with XFG.3 now making up the largest share of Covid cases among circulating variants in England. Combined, the two variants are responsible for around 30 percent of current Covid-19 infections in the country.
“It is normal for viruses to mutate and change over time,” said Dr Alex Allen, Consultant Epidemiologist at the UKHSA. “We continue to monitor all strains of Covid in the UK to ensure we can respond appropriately.”
While no alarm has been raised over increased hospitalizations or deaths, the unusual symptom and apparent immune evasion of the Stratus variants have prompted renewed public health scrutiny.
UKHSA is urging those experiencing new or unexpected respiratory symptoms, especially hoarseness, to consider testing and stay informed on public health guidance as the situation evolves.
