In the midst of growing political tensions within Zanu PF, President Emmerson Mnangagwa has “relieved” Lieutenant General Nhamo Anselem Sanyatwe of his duties as army commander, appointing him as the new Minister of Sports with immediate effect.
Sanyatwe will take over the position from Kirsty Coventry, who was recently elected President of the International Olympic Committee.
With the March 31 protests on the horizon, analysts suggest that Mnangagwa is seeking to alleviate political pressure. War veteran Blessed Geza, who is spearheading the protests over Mnangagwa’s leadership, has demanded the president’s immediate resignation.
