Tinotenda Hove – In what is being described as a miraculous escape, a British man has emerged as the sole survivor of the devastating Air India crash in Ahmedabad, western India, that claimed the lives of 241 people.
Vishwashkumar Ramesh, who was seated in 11A on the ill-fated London-bound Boeing 787, survived the fiery wreckage that left no other passengers or crew alive. According to BBC News, the flight went down shortly after take-off, killing 169 Indian nationals and 52 Britons.
Speaking to the BBC, Vishwashkumar’s brother, Nayan Kumar Ramesh, said the family was still grappling with the magnitude of the tragedy.
“He himself has no idea how he survived, how he got out of the plane,” Nayan said. “When he called us, he was just more worried about my other brother, like ‘Find Ajay, find Ajay.’ That’s all he cares about at the moment.”
Ajay, another brother of Vishwashkumar, was also reportedly on the flight, and his status remains unknown.
“We were all in shock as soon as we heard what happened, just utter shock. Speechless,” Nayan added. “It feels great seeing him [Vishwashkumar] doing well, but we are still very worried about Ajay.”
Air India has confirmed that all other passengers and crew onboard perished in the crash.
A family member, Jay, told the PA news agency that Vishwashkumar had sustained injuries. “He’s got some injuries on his face. He was painted in blood. He’s doing well I think. It’s a big shock.”
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, but officials say a full report will be released in due course. Meanwhile, Vishwashkumar’s survival continues to astonish investigators and relatives alike, as he comes to terms with the trauma and the loss of so many lives.
