Tinotenda Hove – Masvingo – The City of Masvingo is in mourning following the passing of Ward 7 Councillor Tafara Masimba, a dedicated opposition figure and community leader, who died at his Rujeko home late on the night of July 12, 2025. He was 50.
Councillor Masimba, elected in the 2023 municipal elections under the banner of opposition leader Nelson Chamisa, succumbed to complications from a long-standing illness. His political journey dates back to the days of the late MDC founding president Morgan Tsvangirai, under whom he served as Ward 7 chairperson.
Masvingo Mayor, His Worship Councillor Aleck Tabe, confirmed Masimba’s passing and paid tribute to his service and dedication.
“It is with deep sorrow that I announce the passing of Councillor Tafara Masimba,” said Mayor Tabe. “He passed away peacefully at 11:50 PM at his home after a long illness. Councillor Masimba was a humble and hardworking servant of the people. His unwavering commitment to the residents of Ward 7 will not be forgotten.”
The mayor praised Masimba’s devotion to democratic principles and his consistent efforts to improve the lives of people in Rujeko.
“He was a true representative of the people—honest, resilient, and passionate about development. Even when faced with personal health challenges, he remained committed to public service,” said Tabe.
Mayor Tabe also extended condolences to Masimba’s family, colleagues, and the broader Masvingo community.
“On behalf of the City of Masvingo, I send our heartfelt sympathies to Councillor Masimba’s family, fellow councillors, and the residents of Ward 7. This is a significant loss, not just to the council, but to the entire city,” he added.
