Tinotenda Hove– The upcoming Masvingo Urban Ward 7 by-election, scheduled for 13 September following the death of Councillor Tafara Masimba, has taken an historic turn with the entry of Tsungai Mandati, popularly known as Mai Masimba.
Mandati, who is contesting as an independent, is the only woman among the five cleared candidates and will be competing against four male contenders.
Her bold decision to run outside the established party system is being viewed as a significant shift in local politics, as voters increasingly seek alternatives to traditional party structures.
“As the only female candidate, I want to ensure that all voices are heard, and that governance is inclusive and transparent,” Mandati said in an interview. “The impact of women in politics cannot be overstated, as female leaders bring unique perspectives and experiences to policymaking.”
Observers note that her candidacy highlights the persistent gender imbalance in Zimbabwean politics, while also demonstrating that women can play a transformative role in decision-making spaces.
By mounting a competitive independent campaign, Mandati is breaking barriers and inspiring more women to consider political leadership.
As Ward 7 prepares for the by-election, Mandati’s presence in the race serves as a timely reminder of the importance of inclusive governance and the need for greater female representation in Zimbabwe’s political landscape.
