A 34-year-old man from Chinzou Village, under Chief Mutasa, has been sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for the heinous crime of raping a mentally incompetent woman. The Mutare Regional Court handed down the verdict, bringing some measure of justice to the 45-year-old victim and her family.
The offence occurred in May 2024, when the perpetrator, employed as a domestic worker at the victim’s homestead, took advantage of his position to commit the horrific crime. He sent his children to herd goats, leaving him alone with the victim, before dragging her to a spare room and forcibly having sexual intercourse with her without her consent.
The crime only came to light in July 2024, when the victim disclosed the incident to a family member, who promptly reported the matter to the authorities. The swift action taken by the family member and the authorities ensured that justice was served, and the perpetrator was held accountable for his actions.
This case highlights the importance of protecting vulnerable members of society, particularly those with mental disabilities. It also underscores the need for swift action and accountability in cases of sexual violence. The 15-year sentence handed down by the court serves as a deterrent to potential perpetrators and a reminder that such heinous crimes will not be tolerated.
