A 26-year-old Shurugwi man, Tinashe Chigiya, has been remanded in custody for allegedly insulting President Mnangagwa by calling him a dog. The incident occurred on January 27, 2025, near Musavezi River, after a minor drowned.
Chigiya, from Makandire Village in Chief Nhema’s area, blamed Mnangagwa and Zanu PF supporters for allowing Chinese nationals to extract sand from the river, causing environmental damage. He expressed concerns that the river had become unsafe for children due to contamination from Chinese activities.
Magistrate Sithabile Zungula has set the case to continue at a later date. Chigiya’s arrest is part of a broader trend of authorities cracking down on dissenting voices in Zimbabwe .
