Tinotenda Hove — As Zimbabweans continue to grapple with crumbling hospitals, underfunded schools, and widespread poverty, the government is celebrating the near completion of the Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa Law School in Kwekwe District, Midlands Province.

The extravagant facility, loaded with “modern amenities and cutting-edge technology,” has been hailed by ruling party loyalists as a milestone in education. One Zanu PF supporter bragged on Monday: “The Law School’s commissioning by His Excellency, President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, on September 11, 2025, marks a significant milestone in Zimbabwe’s education sector.”

Critics, however, view the project as yet another vanity scheme designed to polish the president’s image while ordinary citizens endure decaying infrastructure and unaffordable education. Questions are being raised about why millions are being poured into a single elite institution when rural schools lack basic textbooks and teachers are underpaid.

The government has even highlighted the road upgrades around the law school as part of its “progress.” Yet, many communities across the country remain cut off due to neglected roads and poor transport links.

For struggling Zimbabweans, the Mnangagwa Law School is a painful reminder of misplaced priorities. While the regime parades its “state-of-the-art” project, the majority continue to survive in an environment where basic services remain a daily struggle.
