ZVISHAVANE – A heartbreaking tragedy struck Tinotenda Hove – Mabasa village in Zvishavane, Midlands Province, where five members of the same family were found dead on Sunday night, believed to have succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning from a burning mbaura (charcoal brazier).

The victims, who had gathered in a rural homestead under Chief Masunda, reportedly lit the brazier to keep warm during the cold winter night. However, the enclosed space and lack of ventilation turned fatal.

Among the deceased was a man employed at Unki Mine in Shurugwi, his two children, and two grandchildren. The family had travelled to their rural home for a visit, with one of the children reportedly preparing to relocate to the United States for university studies.

Authorities believe the toxic fumes from the mbaura overcame the victims while they slept, resulting in their tragic deaths.

Police and local officials attended the scene, and investigations into the incident are ongoing. The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the community, prompting renewed calls for public awareness on the dangers of using charcoal braziers indoors.

Funeral arrangements were underway on Monday as the village mourned the loss of five lives in what has been described as a preventable catastrophe.
