In a unique cultural collaboration, German homeowners in Harare have brought a piece of Zimbabwe’s rich heritage into their modern living space. Commissioning renowned Matobo artists Sithembiso Moyo, Silethemba Ndebele, and Andile Ndebele, these homeowners sought to integrate traditional Matobo hut designs into the walls of their home. This creative fusion of old and new showcases the timelessness of Matobo’s iconic architectural style and serves as a tribute to the region’s rich cultural history.

The Matobo hut designs, deeply rooted in Zimbabwean heritage, represent the ingenuity of indigenous craftsmanship. By transposing these designs onto contemporary walls, the project highlights the relevance of traditional arts in modern spaces and aims to preserve cultural heritage while giving it a fresh, vibrant expression in today’s world.

This initiative, titled “Matobo Goes Fashion…and Beyond,” is more than just a home décor project. It serves as a cultural preservation effort, promoting not only the beauty of Matobo’s unique designs but also empowering local women artists in the process. The project is organized and funded by the German Embassy in Harare, in collaboration with the National Gallery of Zimbabwe in Bulawayo, the Fashion Council of Zimbabwe, and the talented women artists of Matobo.

The fusion of art and architecture invites all to explore and appreciate the wealth of Zimbabwe’s cultural traditions. Inspired to bring these beautiful designs into your own space? There’s no shortage of distinct designs to choose from. For those interested in further inquiries, Sikhulile in Bulawayo can be reached at (+263 77 227 8933), and Yvette in Harare is available at (+263 77 622 4900).

This project exemplifies how cultural heritage, contemporary art, and community empowerment can converge to create something truly extraordinary.
