Tinotenda Hove – A Harare man, Munyaradzi Luke Chirombe (36), has been convicted of culpable homicide by the Hwange Magistrates’ Court after causing a fatal road accident that claimed the life of a pedestrian along the Bulawayo–Victoria Falls Road.
The incident took place on January 13, 2025, at the 281-kilometre peg. Chirombe, who was behind the wheel of a Toyota Townace, lost control of the vehicle and veered off the road, hitting Tobias Dube who was walking on the far-right side of the highway. Dube later died at Mpilo Hospital in Bulawayo.
The court found Chirombe guilty of negligence, citing the following reasons:
- Driving at an excessive speed,
- Failing to maintain proper control of the vehicle, and
- Not reacting appropriately when danger became imminent.
Chirombe was sentenced to pay a USD500 fine or serve six months in prison if he fails to pay.
Following the sentencing, the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) issued a public statement warning against reckless driving.
“Negligent driving endangers lives,” said the NPAZ. “We urge all road users to exercise caution and care at all times. Drive to arrive. One careless moment can cost a life.”
The case highlights the urgent need for greater road safety awareness and responsible driving across Zimbabwe’s highways.
