Tinotenda Hove – Gert Nel Government Primary School, located in the heart of the Gutu District in Masvingo Province, is rolling out a series of vital development initiatives aimed at enhancing both learning conditions and institutional growth.

Mr Trannie Musara… Head

Ms Matizanadzo … Deputy Head

Under the stewardship of Head Mr. Musara Trannie—who took over leadership on 26 February 2023—the school is steadily asserting itself as a model institution in the district.

With a committed team that includes Deputy Head Ms. Matizanadzo Rumbidzai M, Senior Teacher Mr. Manamike Edson, and Teacher-in-Charge Mr. Mpofu Brighton, Gert Nel is blending tradition with transformation.

Major Projects on the Horizon

Faced with rising enrolment numbers, the school has prioritised the construction of a new Early Childhood Development (ECD) classroom block to accommodate the growing number of young learners. This follows the recognition of the school’s ECD centre as the best play centre in the entire cluster—a notable achievement that reflects its strong foundation in early childhood education.

Another key goal for the school is the acquisition of a school bus. “We are currently working towards purchasing a school bus to provide safe and reliable transport for our pupils, especially when they travel for competitions and educational outings,” said Head Mr. Musara.

In addition, the school hopes to invest in borehole water for its thriving garden project. “Water is central to our smart agriculture initiative, and a reliable borehole would support our efforts to maintain the school garden and sustain practical learning,” added Deputy Head Ms. Matizanadzo.

Infrastructure and Support

Gert Nel Government Primary is already well-resourced in several areas—it is a “smart school,” well-fenced, and enjoys both ZESA electricity and backup solar power. The school recently held its consultation day on 12 June 2025, reflecting its ongoing commitment to engaging parents and the broader community in the educational process.

The institution benefits from a vibrant School Development Committee (SDC), chaired by Tizai Givemore, with Mrs. Hall serving as Vice Chairperson, Muramba Rudo as Treasurer, Mushayahanya as Secretary, and Mandati as Committee Member.

Furthermore, the Old Students Association, chaired by Joel Chigome, has become a crucial pillar of support, often mobilising resources and strengthening the school’s identity and pride.

A Legacy of Growth

Established in 1958, Gert Nel Government Primary School has a proud legacy, with past heads including Mrs. Mukundu, Mr. Matavikwa, and Mr. Tonhodzayi. The current administration continues to build on this foundation with a strong focus on academic performance, sporting excellence, and infrastructure expansion.

As it sets its sights on building new facilities, acquiring a school bus, and improving its agricultural initiatives, Gert Nel Government Primary School is proving that with clear vision and committed leadership, rural schools can shine just as brightly.
