Tinotenda Hove – Germiston’s central business district descended into chaos on Tuesday, 12 August, as protesters set the Home Affairs building ablaze during violent clashes with authorities over housing evictions.

The unrest erupted after residents, demanding the right to occupy Pharoe Park flats without paying rent, clashed with law enforcement officers. Protesters blocked roads and hurled objects, prompting a swift response from police and traffic officers.

Several major streets, including President, Queen and Jack, have been closed to traffic as authorities work to restore order. Thick plumes of smoke were seen billowing from the burning building, with emergency services battling to contain the flames.

Witnesses reported scenes of panic as businesses shut their doors and bystanders fled the area. Law enforcement has not yet confirmed any arrests or injuries.

Authorities have urged residents to avoid the Germiston CBD until the situation is brought under control.
