Tinotenda Hove – What started as a light-hearted wager during a Euro 2024 soccer match turned into a meaningful gesture for the environment last week at the German Residence in Zimbabwe.
Ambassador Udo Volz and Thilo Schöne, Director of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Zimbabwe, planted two baobab saplings in the embassy garden—a result of a bet placed during the Germany vs. Scotland match, which ended in a 5–1 victory for Germany. The friendly wager stated that the losing side would plant trees under the winner’s supervision.
The baobab saplings were provided by Dominik Collenberg, CEO of Organic Africa, who holds a deep appreciation for the iconic African tree, both personally and through his work. Baobabs are revered not only for their cultural significance but also for their environmental benefits.
“Planting these trees is more than just fulfilling a bet—it’s a step toward combating climate change and protecting our natural ecosystems,” said Ambassador Volz.
Baobab trees, often referred to as “the tree of life,” play a vital role in improving biodiversity, stabilizing soil, reducing erosion, and enhancing air quality. They also offer shade and shelter in hot climates, making them essential in both ecological and social landscapes.
“This act symbolizes how even playful moments can lead to actions that matter,” added Schöne. “It’s a reminder that everyone has a role to play in sustainability.”
As the saplings begin their journey of growth, the German Embassy invites the public to “watch this space” for updates on the progress of these remarkable African giants.
