Zimbabwe’s Minister of Information Communication Technology, Tatenda Mavetera, has been accused of projecting a self-serving image through her recent activities. Despite her efforts to appear as a devoted public servant and Christian leader, her actions have raised concerns about her commitment to tangible development and humanitarian work.

Mavetera’s visit to communities affected by a whirlwind in Ward 21, Ringa, was met with skepticism. While she provided food aid, promises to rebuild damaged homes remain unfulfilled. “We handed over some foodstuffs and continue working together with the civil protection unit to assist especially on the houses which were damaged,” Mavetera said. However, the lack of progress on housing reconstruction has left many questioning her sincerity.

Moreover, Mavetera’s emphasis on attending church gatherings during Easter has been seen as an attempt to bolster her image as a devout Christian leader. “It was a time of spiritual renewal, community bonding, and meaningful discussions on faith and development,” she said. Yet, her words ring hollow when compared to the pressing needs of her constituents.

The minister’s actions appear to be more focused on projecting a saintly image rather than delivering meaningful results. As one community member aptly put it, “Actions speak louder than words.” Mavetera’s constituents deserve tangible solutions, not photo opportunities. Until she prioritizes substance over image, her efforts will continue to be met with skepticism.
