Harare- In a statement aimed at clarifying the opposition’s position, Senator Sengezo Tshabangu, representing the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), has declared that the party will not be drawn into commenting on the internal affairs of the ruling ZANU-PF party.
The statement, issued on Thursday, comes amid ongoing political manoeuvring and reported factions within ZANU-PF.
Senator Tshabangu sought to draw a firm line, asserting that the CCC’s focus remains squarely on its own organisational rebuilding and long-term electoral strategy.
“We want to set the record straight that we reserve our comments on ZANU-PF’s internal issues, as we’ve nothing to do with ZANU-PF,” Tshabangu stated.
“We are only focused on building our support base and getting ready to face ZANU-PF in an election scheduled after 2030.”
The declaration signals a strategic shift for the main opposition, suggesting a move away from reactive politics and towards a long-term, grassroots-focused campaign. By explicitly mentioning an election “after 2030,” the statement acknowledges the lengthy timeframe before the next election and parliamentary elections, positioning the CCC for a marathon effort to challenge the ruling party’s decades-long hold on power.
Political analysts suggest this approach may be an attempt to consolidate the party’s structure following a period of significant internal challenges and external pressure. The CCC, led by Nelson Chamisa, faced considerable obstacles, including disputed election results and alleged harassment of its members.
Senator Tshabangu’s remarks indicate a party prioritising internal cohesion and voter mobilization over engaging in the day-to-day political squabbles of its rival. This stance of deliberate distance underscores the deep political divide in Zimbabwe and the CCC’s intent to position itself as a distinct and patient alternative to the electorate.
There was no immediate comment from ZANU-PF officials regarding the CCC’s stated position.
