Controversy Surrounds Wicknell Chivayo’s Gift to Prophet Inzwirashe Matema

Tinotenda Hove – Businessman and tenderpreneur Wicknell Chivayo has come under scrutiny after reportedly gifting Prophet Inzwirashe Matema a brand-new 2025 Toyota Fortuner and USD50,000 in cash, raising questions about the relationship between wealth, influence, and religious figures.

Chivayo praised the Masowe church leader, saying, “I have come to realize that the humility of mankind is the highest honour and exaltation of God… it may often appear as if chinamato chedu chakasvoreka simply because we remove our shoes and worship in open spaces, but that’s exactly where the Holy Spirit manifests and meets us at our time of need.”

Critics argue that such lavish gifts blur the line between spiritual devotion and material incentives. By publicly rewarding Prophet Matema with a luxury vehicle and a large cash sum, some observers say it risks creating the perception that religious influence can be bought.

“It is not the glamour of the pulpit that matters, but the willingness to remain grounded in prayer and faithful to God’s call,” Chivayo added. While intended as praise, detractors suggest this statement does little to counter the optics of a high-profile monetary gift.

Social media users have questioned whether this act aligns with the values of humility and service emphasized in Masowe teachings. One online commentator noted, “The gospel is supposed to be about selfless service, not receiving SUVs and tens of thousands in cash for street preaching.”

Chivayo’s gesture has reignited debates over the growing intersection of wealth, politics, and religion in Zimbabwe, highlighting concerns that spiritual leaders may be increasingly influenced by financial incentives.

Despite the controversy, Chivayo defended his decision, stating, “May this small token strengthen your hands and lengthen your reach, for the harvest is ready and the Master is pleased. God bless you.”
