The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has implemented a new $50 visa fee for Zimbabwean nationals, putting an end to the previous visa-exempt arrangement between the two countries.
Previously, Zimbabwe was one of the few countries whose citizens could enter the DRC without a visa, but under the new policy, travelers must now obtain a visa prior to arrival.
The exact reasons behind this policy change have not been made public by the Congolese authorities.
This shift is likely to impact business travelers, tourists, and cross-border traders who regularly commute between Zimbabwe and the DRC.
Zimbabwe and the DRC have long enjoyed strong diplomatic and economic relations, with Zimbabwean businesses active in key sectors such as mining and agriculture in the DRC.
At this time, there has been no official comment from the Zimbabwean government on whether they will introduce similar measures in response.
Travellers are encouraged to confirm with relevant authorities before making travel plans to ensure they adhere to the new visa requirements.
There is speculation that the DRC may be displeased with the recent withdrawal of the SADC army, a decision made during a meeting led by Zimbabwe’s President Mnangagwa.
