Tinotenda Hove – Controversial businessman Wicknell Chivayo has come out swinging against mounting allegations of corruption, insisting he has nothing to hide and branding the accusations as part of a politically motivated smear campaign.
Responding to renewed scrutiny over his links to botched government contracts—most notably the Gwanda Solar Project and alleged involvement with the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC)—Chivayo dismissed the claims as baseless.
“These reports… appear designed to insinuate criminal conduct, corruption or money laundering in relation to legitimate commercial transactions and legally binding contracts involving companies affiliated with me,” said Chivayo in a fiery statement.
He took particular issue with what he termed “so-called financial intelligence reports” circulating from Zimbabwe and South Africa. “I have not committed any offence, nor have any of my companies acted unlawfully in any manner whatsoever,” he insisted. “Executing a contract with the Government and receiving payment is very common practice and can never be seen as a crime.”
Chivayo challenged the logic of his critics, arguing that the size of government contracts is not evidence of corruption: “The mere fact that the contract price runs into millions is neither evidence of any criminality nor a basis to allege corruption. I can’t be responsible for people’s ignorance of basic business principles.”
Taking aim at social media critics and political opponents, Chivayo suggested that much of the outrage is rooted in envy and misinformation. “No money is just stolen like most idiots think. If it was the case, surely a sizeable majority of Zimbabweans would have been millionaires by now.”
Addressing the ZEC allegations directly, he reiterated: “I have never had any business dealings with ZEC. The Electoral Commission is on record to confirm that they have had no contractual relationship with me whatsoever… It is therefore not only false, but utterly illogical, if not stupid, to suggest that I could have benefited from inflated payments.”
Chivayo further accused exiled opposition figures and “failed political outfits” of conspiring to create a scandal: “Behind the veils of these anonymous leaks and selectively weaponized financial intelligence lies a bigger political agenda… Their strategy is to target any businessman known to be affiliated with or openly supportive of ZANU-PF.”
He maintained that his business dealings are above board, legally sound, and endorsed by his legal teams in both Zimbabwe and South Africa: “These allegations are just a witch hunt and a phishing expedition.”
In closing, the flamboyant businessman fired a parting shot: “No amount of threats, malicious propaganda or manufactured scandals will ever deter me from supporting ZANU-PF, standing with the President I believe in, or pursuing my destiny to become the youngest billionaire in Zimbabwe—and, God willing, in Africa at large.”
