The death of Pope Francis has ignited global conversations about who will succeed him as the next leader of the Roman Catholic Church. Among the loudest voices are those calling for the appointment of a Black African pope — a historic first for the church.
The Catholic College of Cardinals, which will elect the next pope, currently has around 100 eligible members, including 18 from Africa. With Africa being one of the fastest-growing regions for Catholicism, many believe the continent is not only spiritually vibrant but also ready to lead the global church.
Advocates for an African pope argue that representation should reflect the dynamic growth of the faith. “If growth and spiritual vitality were the main criteria, Africa would be the natural choice,” said one religious scholar.
Pope Francis, known for his progressive views and focus on social justice, will be laid to rest this Sunday. As preparations for his burial continue, speculation about his successor is heating up — and Africa’s voice is louder than ever in the conversation.
