Tinotenda Hove – The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed the tragic death of a nine-year-old boy, Shelton Panganai, who was attacked and killed by four suspected Boer dogs while playing with friends in Darwendale last month.

In a statement released on August 4, ZRP said the incident occurred at Bornvalley Farm on July 17, 2025. Shelton was playing soccer with other children when the dogs allegedly escaped from their owner’s property and charged at the group.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms that Shelton Panganai aged nine was mauled to death by four suspected Boer dogs at Bornvalley Farm, Darwendale on 17th July 2025, while playing soccer in the company of other children,” said Police Commissioner Paul Nyathi.

According to the police, the children scattered in different directions, but Shelton was unfortunately cornered and fatally attacked in a nearby gum tree plantation.

Following the incident, police arrested one suspect, identified as Mark Masendeke Magede, believed to be the owner of the dogs. The animals were subsequently put down by relevant authorities under ZRP supervision.

“The dogs have since been killed by relevant authorities under the supervision of the Zimbabwe Republic Police,” said Commissioner Nyathi.

He also addressed growing public outcry and speculation on social media that the case would be covered up, assuring the nation that justice would take its course.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterates that the case will not be swept under the carpet as alleged on social media posts and everything will be handled in line with the country’s laws,” he said.

ZRP confirmed that a full-scale investigation is underway to determine how the dogs managed to escape and whether there was any negligence involved.

The community of Darwendale remains in shock following the incident, which has sparked renewed calls for tighter control of dangerous dog breeds and better enforcement of animal ownership regulations.
