Avoid Mushikashika, Opposition Councillor Warns Harare Residents

Tinotenda Hove – Ward 16 Councillor Denford Ngadziore has urged Harare residents, particularly in Mabelreign, to avoid using illegal commuter transport known as mushikashika, warning that certain streets have become crime hotspots.

In a weekend statement addressed to residents, Ngadziore said there had been a worrying increase in robberies targeting unsuspecting passengers who board unregistered vehicles in the area.

“Dear Mabelreign Residents,” he wrote. “Sherwood Dr, Quenton & Ritchwell Ave are now crime hotspots. Many have been robbed after boarding mushikashika. Where possible, avoid mushikashika and use safer transport. Please share widely in your social and residents groups.”

The councillor’s warning comes amid mounting concerns over violent crimes linked to unregulated transport operators across Harare. While mushikashika remains popular due to its lower fares and availability, especially during peak hours, authorities have repeatedly warned that the lack of registration, safety checks, and traceability leaves passengers vulnerable to theft and assault.

Residents have welcomed the alert but called for stronger policing in the affected areas. Some have also urged City Council and the Zimbabwe Republic Police to intensify operations against illegal transport operators to protect commuters.

Ngadziore stressed that community awareness and vigilance were critical in reducing incidents. “Our safety is in our hands. By avoiding high-risk options, we can protect ourselves and each other,” he added.
