Shurugwi – All roads will lead to the highly anticipated Tongogara RDC Chairman’s Marathon, where athletes from all corners of the country will compete in a variety of races.

Under the theme “Embrace Wellness, Embrace Life,” this event is set to address crucial issues such as drug abuse and the high crime rate among the youth. The marathon, unique in its mission, aims to promote health and unity, providing a platform for athletes to showcase their talents.

Tongogara RDC Chairman, Councillor Wilbert Rambanapasi, expressed his excitement about the event, highlighting its significance for both the community and the athletes. “I am greatly pleased with this initiative, where athletes will have the opportunity to compete in 5km, 10km, 21km, and 42km races. Our goal is to engage with the people, understand their concerns, and also communicate the council’s expectations,” he said.

The marathon will take place on June 7, 2025, at Donga.

“I am grateful to the council and humbled by this event, where athletes will compete for prizes from our generous partners, including ZB Bank, Econet Zimbabwe, POSB, BYWORD, SHAB, RAMS Security, Colour Champions, Gweru Toyota, and the Ministry of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture. These prizes are worth thousands of dollars,” Rambanapasi added. “Through this marathon, we are sending a powerful message to the residents of Tongogara Rural Council and Zimbabwe as a whole about the importance of wellness. Exercise is the best form of medicine,” he concluded.

Silver Bhebhe, one of the organizers of the historic marathon, expressed his gratitude towards Tongogara RDC for hosting the event. “This council bears the name of one of the finest national liberation heroes, and participating in this marathon brings to life the late Josiah Magama Tongogara’s vision for a better livelihood for all,” Bhebhe said.

He also pointed out that the marathon is an opportunity to reshape perceptions of the Tongogara Business Centre, formerly known as Chirasavana, which had a negative association with the abandonment of children before being renamed in honor of the late liberation hero. “We expect athletes from all walks of life to join us and be part of this exciting event,” he added.

Walter Siyai Zimusi, the 1st Vice President of the National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe (NAAZ), also praised the organizers. “This is a great initiative for sports and the development of athletes. On behalf of the association, we thank Tongogara RDC and encourage other stakeholders across the country to support races like this in all ten provinces,” Zimusi said.

The event promises to be an exciting and impactful day for both participants and the local community, highlighting the importance of wellness while honoring the legacy of Josiah Magama Tongogara.
