A tragic series of road accidents occurred on Friday, March 28, 2025, resulting in the loss of 15 lives in Norton, Chegutu, and Mutare. According to National Police Spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi, four fatal road traffic accidents took place that day.

One of the accidents happened on the Harare-Bulawayo Road when a Nissan Caravan kombi carrying 20 passengers veered off the road and overturned, killing seven people and injuring 12 others.

Commissioner Nyathi explained, “In one of the road traffic accidents, seven people were killed while 12 others were injured… Three adults and an infant died on the spot while three others succumbed to the injuries upon admission at Norton Hospital”.

Another accident occurred on the same road when a Chevrolet Trail Blazer vehicle collided with a Toyota Hilux vehicle, resulting in three fatalities and two injuries. The Chevrolet Trail Blazer had attempted to overtake the Toyota Hilux, which was turning right, leading to the collision.

Two people were killed and nine others injured in a separate accident involving a Toyota Toace truck in Chegutu. The truck veered off the road at a curve, throwing all passengers in the loading box out of the vehicle.

In Mutare, three people lost their lives when a Volvo haulage truck overturned on the Harare-Mutare road near the Wise Owl turn-off.

Commissioner Nyathi urged motorists to exercise caution, saying, “Drivers should be patient, observant, and avoid speeding and overtaking in situations where it is not safe to do so” .
